The project consist of the construction of 120 metres high roller
compacted concrete hydroelectric dam across Padas river near Kuala Tomani, a 180 MW power
generation facility, associated transmission lines, infrastructure and water reservoir. The project
is set up to meet the load forecast that Sabah’s electricity demand is expected to increase to
1,800 MW in 2020 from 1,100 MW in 2016. The advantage of Upper Padas site is its location in a
narrow reservoir site associated with a large catchment of about 1,885 km2. The reservoir will only
be 12 km long and covers 5.9 km2. There is relatively easy access, a simple land use pattern
and no or minimum settlement will be inundated.
